DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon urged the public to give San Miguel Corp. (SMC) time to address concerns over the proposed P7.78-billion Boracay bridge project and allow continued dialogue with stakeholders.
He appealed conflicting statements between SMC and Aklan officials regarding whether the project had been cancelled.
Dizon said no public consultation has yet been conducted and stressed that, as a public-private partnership, the project must be acceptable to the local community.
The 2.54-kilometer bridge linking Boracay Island to mainland Malay has faced strong opposition from local officials and groups since 2019.
Critics cite environmental risks, possible overdevelopment, and impacts on local livelihoods, particularly the boat industry.
