SENATE APPROVES PRESIDENTIAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP BILL ON FINAL READING

The Senate on Monday approved on final reading a bill creating the Presidential Merit Scholarship Program (PMSP), with Senate Bill No. 2410 receiving a unanimous 19-0 vote.

The measure aims to provide educational assistance to academically outstanding Filipino senior high school graduates, covering tuition, school fees, books, living expenses, and transportation.

The bill also requires scholars to render return service in the Philippines for a period equivalent to the years they received the scholarship.

Sen. Joel Villanueva, the bill’s sponsor and principal author, stressed that the timely release of scholarship benefits is a government obligation.

He warned that delayed assistance could cause students to miss semesters or lose important educational opportunities.
