The number of leptospirosis cases in Manila has exceeded the epidemiologic threshold, with cases rising from 1.27 percent last week to 3.48 percent, according to the city health department.
Manila recorded 12 new cases, bringing the total to 982, including 35 deaths, while several district hospitals have reached full capacity.
San Lazaro Hospital said admissions have declined but warned of another possible surge linked to flooding on Aug. 29 and 30.
Mayor Isko Moreno said free doxycycline capsules are available at 44 health centers and seven district hospitals and ordered officials to distribute the medicine to residents affected by recent floods.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health reported that Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Parañaque, Pasig, San Juan, Valenzuela, and Quezon City have also exceeded their leptospirosis epidemic thresholds, while chikungunya cases nationwide increased by 38 percent from last year.
