President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged cities and municipalities nationwide to replicate Marikina’s solid waste management system to help address flooding.
During his inspection of the Marikina River Linear Park and centralized materials recovery facility in Barangay Sto. Niño, Marcos said effective flood mitigation requires more than river desilting and garbage collection.
He praised Marikina for clearing no-build zones, relocating structures, and installing trash catchers to prevent waste from reaching waterways.
The city’s MRF processes biodegradable waste into compost and converts plastics into bags, bricks, and other useful materials, including school desk components.
Marcos said Marikina’s system serves as a template for other cities, particularly in the National Capital Region, by linking flood management, waste recovery, recycling, and environmental protection.
