Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the proposed Department of Education (DepEd) budget for 2027 appears lower than its 2026 allocation because infrastructure funds were reduced following the flood control scandal.
DepEd and its attached agencies were allotted P975.96 billion under the 2027 National Expenditures Program, down P39.34 billion or 3.88 percent from the P1.012-trillion 2026 budget, but still higher than the P928.5-billion 2026 NEP allocation.
Angara said the higher 2026 budget was partly due to the reallocation of funds originally intended for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to education, health, and social services.
He also appealed for additional funding for the school-based feeding program, which is proposed to drop by 55 percent from P25.6 billion in 2026 to P11.43 billion in 2027.
Angara warned that reduced funding could affect the feeding program and other initiatives, including the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning Program, which supports students struggling with reading, mathematics, and science.
