Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez was arrested and placed under police custody at a hospital after the Sandiganbayan issued a warrant in connection with a P7.4-billion plunder case filed by the Office of the Ombudsman.
The case also names fugitive former congressman Zaldy Co, Romualdez’s household staff Joselyn Serenio, and money changer Felicito Guevarra, who are accused of receiving billions of pesos in alleged kickbacks from government projects.
Romualdez, who was brought to Cardinal Santos Medical Center after reportedly suffering a cardiovascular event and anxiety attack, will remain under hospital detention pending an assessment of his fitness for transfer to a regular jail.
The Ombudsman alleged that Romualdez received P2 billion in cash deliveries 15 times from 2022 to 2025 and used P5 billion of the alleged proceeds to establish shell companies and acquire properties and other assets.
Malacañang said it respects the Ombudsman’s action and stressed that anyone found accountable, regardless of political ties or family connections, should face the law.
