PERA EXPANSION EXPECTED TO DEEPEN LONG-TERM SAVINGS

The number of Personal Equity and Retirement Account (PERA) contributors rose nearly fivefold to 30,055 as of end-June, widening the program’s potential to support long-term domestic savings and investment.

Presidential Legislative Liaison Office Secretary Joey Salceda said PERA funds can help finance bonds, equities, infrastructure, and business expansion while providing Filipinos with greater retirement security.

Cumulative PERA contributions also increased by 36.7 percent to P757.6 million, although the program remains small compared with the country’s P8.4 trillion gross national savings in 2025.

The government has introduced measures to encourage PERA participation, including tax incentives for qualified savers and additional deductions for employers contributing to employees’ accounts.

Economists said higher savings can strengthen economic resilience and provide capital for investment, but cautioned that the country’s external imbalances cannot be blamed solely on household consumption.
