Parts of Metro Manila recorded “very unhealthy” to “acutely unhealthy” air quality after a fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said.
Valenzuela and Marikina logged the worst levels, while several other cities also recorded poor air quality, prompting authorities to advise residents to wear masks outdoors.
The Office of Civil Defense warned of hazardous conditions as smoke from the landfill fire continued despite being under control.
Officials said the blaze contributed to worsening pollution, alongside vehicle and industrial emissions, with PM2.5 levels posing the highest health risks.
The Environmental Management Bureau is investigating the cause of the fire, which is suspected to be linked to gas buildup due to extreme heat.
