The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has warned the public about increasing sightings of Finlayson’s squirrels in Metro Manila, which resemble chipmunks and are often mistaken for native wildlife.
The animals have been spotted in campuses, parks, trees, and even power lines, drawing attention for their cute appearance and agility.
However, the DENR stressed that the species is not native to the Philippines and is considered invasive.
It warned that if the population grows, the squirrels could compete with local wildlife for food and habitat, disrupting ecological balance.
The agency reminded the public that even seemingly harmless animals can pose environmental risks when introduced to non-native ecosystems.
