Senator Loren Legarda has criticized the Department of Agriculture’s plan to import 300,000 to 350,000 metric tons of fish, saying it comes at a time when high fuel costs are already crippling local fishers.
She stressed that the government should instead prioritize immediate relief measures, such as suspending VAT on fuel to ease operating costs in the fishing sector.
A Senate hearing showed that nearly 50% of small fishers in several provinces have stopped fishing due to rising fuel prices, with fuel now accounting for up to 80% of their costs.
Legarda said she has filed measures in the Senate seeking VAT and excise tax suspension on fuel, arguing that this would provide faster relief for households and livelihoods.
She also urged the DA to focus on subsidies and support programs, saying fish imports should only be a last resort to protect local food security.
