The United States is considering opening all its ports to fresh pineapple exports from the Philippines after identifying measures to address pest-related concerns.
The proposal by the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service would significantly expand market access, potentially increasing Philippine pineapple exports to as much as 19,200 metric tons annually.
Exported pineapples would need to meet specific phytosanitary requirements, including the use of fruit fly-resistant varieties or approved treatments.
US authorities estimate the expanded trade could generate substantial consumer benefits while having minimal impact on domestic producers.
The proposal is open for public comment until Aug. 10, after which a final decision will be made.
