The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is strengthening ports nationwide to make them more resilient against typhoons, earthquakes, heavy rains and strong waves.
PPA General Manager Jay Santiago said the agency is raising port ground levels and using stronger materials to protect critical infrastructure during disasters.
Port decks and pavements will also be upgraded to handle up to 3.6 tons per square meter, while selected piers and wharves will be raised to 3.5 meters above the lowest average tide.
The PPA is also elevating breakwaters and building reinforced concrete piers and deflector walls in areas vulnerable to storm surges and large waves.
Santiago said these upgrades are needed to keep ports operating as vital lifelines for transporting food, fuel, medical supplies, and relief goods during emergencies.
