The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has ordered former chairperson Sheriff Abas to explain allegations of vote-buying linked to his candidacy for Cotabato congressman in the 2026 Bangsamoro parliamentary election.
The order cited a social media post allegedly showing ₱3,000 placed beside a sample ballot bearing Abas’ name, which the Comelec said could constitute vote-buying under election laws.
Abas was given 24 hours to submit his explanation or face a possible election offense complaint or disqualification case.
The Comelec also dismissed social media claims that automated counting machines in Wao, Lanao del Sur accepted votes only for certain candidates and warned against the spread of false information about the elections.
Meanwhile, around 800 teachers reportedly withdrew from poll duties due to security concerns, while the PNP deployed 10,500 personnel and other government agencies, observers and citizens’ groups prepared to support the first regular BARMM parliamentary elections.
