Rafael Manuel’s feature film “Filipiñana” has been selected as the Philippines’ official entry for the 2027 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
The Film Academy of the Philippines announced the selection on September 13 after choosing the film from eight shortlisted Philippine entries.
The film, which expands Manuel’s award-winning short of the same name, follows Isabel, played by Jorrybel Agoto, a tee girl at an exclusive country club.
“Filipiñana” explores social class, power, labor, and inequality through the tensions and hidden histories surrounding the club’s privileged community.
However, the selection does not guarantee an Oscar nomination, as the film must still advance through the Academy’s selection process, with no Philippine film yet having received a nomination in the category.
