Elena Rybakina captured her first US Open title and rose to the world No. 1 ranking after defeating defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
The Kazakhstan player’s victory came just weeks after an injury scare threatened her participation in the tournament.
Rybakina had to manage a heel injury with a careful training and recovery plan before competing in New York.
Her US Open run included wins over Naomi Osaka, Zheng Qinwen and Coco Gauff.
The triumph marked her third Grand Slam title and second major win of the year.
