Taiwan has called on the Philippines and Japan to consult with it regarding their planned maritime boundary talks, saying the areas involved overlap with its claimed exclusive economic zone east of the island.
The Philippines and Japan recently agreed to begin formal negotiations to delimit their maritime boundaries following a meeting between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry insisted that its sovereignty and maritime rights are “indisputable” and urged both countries to take Taiwan’s interests into account in the discussions.
China has criticized the talks as “illegal” and also claims authority over the disputed waters, while Taipei rejects Beijing’s claims.
Despite not recognizing Taiwan as a state, both Manila and Tokyo maintain close unofficial ties with the island.
