Olympic fencer Maxine Esteban secured a silver medal at the 2026 African Fencing Championships in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, after a narrow 14–15 loss to Egypt’s Sara Amr Hossny in the women’s individual foil final.
The Filipino-Ivorian athlete had a strong run to the final, defeating opponents from Egypt and Tunisia after an opening bye in the tournament.
Esteban said the close defeat was heartbreaking but expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete and improve.
She also thanked her coaches for their support throughout the competition.
Ranked No. 32 in the world, Esteban is now focused on improving her standing as she aims for qualification to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
