The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are upgrading their defense strategies and capabilities to strengthen protection of the West Philippine Sea amid continued tensions with China.
Officials said the shift includes modern multi-domain operations, cyber and intelligence enhancements, and a stronger maritime presence, including plans for 56 new PCG ships and a reinforced position on Pagasa Island.
The AFP is also implementing a “transparency initiative” to counter disinformation and reinforce awareness of the 2016 arbitral ruling on the South China Sea.
At the same time, the military is expanding international defense partnerships while advancing self-reliant defense programs to develop local capabilities.
Officials stressed that, beyond equipment and strategy, national resolve remains key to defending Philippine sovereignty in the disputed waters.
