PH PRESSES MARITIME CONCERNS IN FIRST BILATERAL TALKS WITH CHINA IN TWO YEARS

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro raised the Philippines’ strong protest over China’s recent actions in the West Philippine Sea during her first bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in two years.

She expressed concerns over incidents in Ayungin Shoal and Bajo de Masinloc, condemned offensive portrayals of Filipinos, and urged China to respect international law and avoid escalating tensions.

Despite these disputes, both sides agreed to keep communication channels open and continue confidence-building efforts.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to advancing negotiations on the ASEAN-China Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.

The meeting reflects the Philippines’ policy of pursuing dialogue with China while firmly protecting its national interests.
