The Philippines is planning to establish its first coal terminal to blend domestic coal for power generation and reduce reliance on imports.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the facility could help maximize coal from the Semirara mine, which has lower calorific value than some imported coal.
Around 95% of the country’s coal supply is imported, with Indonesia accounting for nearly all of those imports.
The Department of Energy is considering Mindanao as a possible site, subject to a feasibility study.
The move comes as Indonesia prepares to tighten control over coal exports starting in 2027.
