DEPED CONSIDERS REQUIRING STUDENTS TO USE TRANSPARENT BAGS

The Department of Education (DepEd) is considering consulting stakeholders on requiring students to use transparent bags to strengthen security in schools.

DepEd Undersecretary Malcolm Garma said schools nationwide have heightened security measures, including bag checks, with some already requiring clear bags.

Garma said the agency needs to gather feedback to balance security concerns with students’ right to privacy.

The move comes after recent fatal shootings at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City and Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School in Zamboanga City.

DepEd is expected to consider stakeholders’ views before deciding on any nationwide policy on transparent school bags.
