HOUSE PASSES BILL CONDONING PENALTIES ON AGRICULTURAL LOANS

The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved on third and final reading a bill seeking to condone unpaid interests, penalties, and surcharges on agricultural loans.

House Bill No. 10750, or the Agrarian and Agricultural Loan Restructuring and Condonation Act, was approved with 256 votes in favor, with no abstentions or negative votes.

The measure covers farmers, fisherfolk, agrarian reform beneficiaries, and their cooperatives, allowing them to restructure their loans and have certain unpaid charges waived.

Loans covered include those secured through agencies such as the Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Credit Policy Council, National Food Authority, and other government credit institutions.

The bill aims to restore borrowers’ access to credit, improve their financial stability and creditworthiness, and support increased agricultural productivity.
