President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the government will finally implement a long-standing flood master plan as he inspected flood-hit areas in Central Luzon.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said five of 39 flood catchment projects under the “Sponge City” initiative are targeted for completion by June 2027, with the rest expected by December 2027.
The five priority sites are Miriam College, Camp Aguinaldo, Rajah Sulayman, Remedios Circle and the UP Sunken Garden.
Marcos also ordered the repair of damaged bridges and flood-control structures in Tarlac, Zambales and Pampanga and provided relief and cash assistance to affected families.
Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla cited the 35-hectare Imus Retarding Basin in Cavite as a model flood-control project capable of storing up to 1.12 million cubic meters of stormwater.
