The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) is urging the government to lift the country’s coal moratorium amid rising power supply concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East.
PCCI president Ferdinand Ferrer said the policy shift is needed to ensure energy stability and affordability, stressing that economic growth cannot depend on an uncertain power supply.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the Department of Energy is studying the possible lifting of the 2020 coal ban, citing high fuel prices and coal’s role as a reliable baseload energy source.
The PCCI argued that modern, high-efficiency coal technologies can balance energy needs with environmental goals while supporting industrial competitiveness.
However, some analysts warn that renewed reliance on coal could increase price volatility and challenge long-term climate commitments.
