Sen. Risa Hontiveros called on the government to strengthen social services to help Filipinos cope with the rising costs brought by the energy crisis linked to tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking before labor groups in Batangas, she said wage increases alone are not enough if prices of food and transport continue to rise.
She proposed reallocating funds to expand the public utility vehicle service contracting program to ensure stable income for drivers and affordable transport for commuters.
Hontiveros also pushed for a supplemental budget that includes subsidies for transport workers and urged the government to act as a service provider rather than just a crisis manager.
She stressed the need for long-term reforms in basic services while calling on workers and unions to help lead efforts for systemic change.
