The government is considering deportation as the fastest way to bring back fugitive former congressman Zaldy Co from the Czech Republic, according to a Department of Justice official.
Undersecretary Raul Vasquez said authorities are evaluating both extradition and deportation, noting that deportation is quicker if a person is deemed an undocumented foreign national.
Co was reportedly arrested for immigration violations after his Philippine passport was cancelled due to his status as a fugitive linked to a corruption case before the Sandiganbayan.
Although the Philippines has no extradition treaty with the Czech Republic, officials said deportation remains possible under local laws and international cooperation frameworks.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with Czech authorities to facilitate Co’s possible return to the country.
