The Department of Health (DOH) has warned that people living with HIV (PLHIV) are at higher risk of developing tuberculosis (TB) due to weakened immune systems.
In a Facebook post, the DOH explained that HIV attacks the body’s immune system, particularly the CD4 T-cells, which help defend against infections.
These cells act as “managers” of the immune system, coordinating the body’s response to bacteria and other threats.
When CD4 T-cells are depleted, the body becomes more vulnerable to opportunistic infections like TB.
The DOH added that TB bacteria can remain inactive in the body but may become active when the immune system is weakened by HIV.
