The Philippines ranked third globally for the highest burden of tuberculosis (TB) in 2024, with an incidence rate of 500 new cases per 100,000 population, according to the World Health Organization’s 2025 report.
The country accounted for 6.8 percent of global TB cases and is classified as “severely endemic,” alongside nations like Lesotho and Papua New Guinea.
The Philippines also faces high rates of HIV-associated TB and multidrug-resistant TB, contributing to treatment challenges.
Health authorities noted gaps in TB diagnosis, with many cases going unreported despite proper treatment being 90 percent effective.
In response, the Department of Health plans to screen 12 million Filipinos next year and has introduced shorter, more effective treatment regimens, including for drug-resistant TB.
