6,000 JEEPNEYS EYED FOR E-VEHICLE TRANSITION, SAYS LTFRB

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is eyeing the conversion of around 6,000 traditional jeepneys into electric vehicles by the end of the year as part of the government’s transport modernization program.

LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II said the target supports the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, which requires at least five percent of public utility vehicles to shift to electric units.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said it is supporting the transition through low-interest loans under its E-Transport Loan Program, offering up to P1.5 million per vehicle.

Mendoza noted that taxis are leading the EV shift, while fewer than 1,000 electric jeepneys are currently operating in the country.

Transport group Pasang Masda welcomed the initiative, citing potential fuel savings for drivers amid rising fuel prices.
