Malacañang on Friday said a proposed jeepney fare hike is “premature” despite a possible eighth straight week of oil price increases, noting that the existing ₱1 provisional adjustment remains enough to cover fuel costs.
Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said hearings are ongoing as the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reviews petitions from transport groups.
Based on the LTFRB’s computation, the current provisional increase still sufficiently offsets rising fuel expenses for jeepney operators.
The agency is prioritizing discussions on potential bus fare hikes since buses do not have a temporary fare adjustment in place.
Meanwhile, the LTFRB is studying possible assistance for jeepney drivers and operators, who are also calling for stricter enforcement against illegal or “kolorum” vehicles.
