The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region XI denied claims that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the suspension of garbage collection operations in Davao City, calling the reports false and misleading.
It said the regional office issued the suspension of the Davao City Sanitary Landfill on May 21 after a trash slide incident that killed two people and injured others.
The order was meant to secure the site, allow recovery operations, and conduct geotechnical assessments to ensure safety.
DENR officials said the move was a technical decision made with the local government, while the President had no involvement.
The agency added that waste management alternatives are in place, and the suspension will only be lifted once safety measures are fully complied with and verified.
