Batangas 1st District Rep. Leandro Leviste has purchased the historic house in Wilhelmsfeld, Germany, where national hero José Rizal finished his novel Noli Me Tangere.
The acquisition aims to preserve the property and promote Philippine history, with plans to convert it into a museum open to both Filipino and foreign visitors.
Rizal stayed in the house in 1886 while studying ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg, and he also wrote the poem A las flores de Heidelberg there.
The property had fallen into disuse during the COVID-19 pandemic and was brought to Leviste’s attention by his mother, Senator Loren Legarda.
The signing ceremony included local officials, representatives of the Protestant church, and the great-grandson of Pastor Karl Ullmer, who presented Leviste with items linked to Rizal, including a table resembling the one on which he wrote Noli Me Tangere.
