Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has vowed to dismantle a longstanding corruption network within the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), targeting decades of illegal activities.
Administrative complaints have been filed against 12 regional BFP officials involved in a “slot-for-sale” scheme and other irregularities, while six Northern Mindanao officials face charges for recruitment violations.
Remulla revealed that corruption in the BFP has grown into an estimated P15-billion-a-year operation, involving illegal recruitment, compromised fire safety inspections, and forced sale of fire extinguishers.
Several officials, including former BFP-Eastern Visayas director Chief Supt. Adel Bautista, have been placed under 90-day preventive suspension for allegedly demanding bribes from applicants.
Remulla also called for the removal of BFP chief Jesus Fernandez, with his replacement already being considered by President Marcos.
