Senator Jinggoy Estrada has proposed removing the mandatory Senior High School (SHS) level under the K to 12 program to simplify the basic education system.
His Senate Bill 3001 maintains the core principles of the Enhanced Basic Education Act but eliminates SHS, aiming to improve efficiency and quality.
Estrada criticized the SHS program for its congested curriculum, overworked teachers, and low employment rates among graduates.
Although the bill was not tackled due to time constraints in the current Congress, Estrada plans to refile it in the 20th Congress.
A recent survey showed declining public satisfaction with SHS, highlighting concerns over its effectiveness and the added financial burden on students and families.
