Detained Senator Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada was rushed to Cardinal Santos Medical Center after suffering severe pain when his left knee snapped while getting up from a seated position inside Quezon City Jail.
Orthopedic surgeon Fernando Syquia said Estrada sustained a tear in his left knee, an injury that commonly requires surgery.
The 63-year-old senator had been allowed by the Sandiganbayan to undergo a medical evaluation for his knees last Monday.
Estrada is already suffering from osteoarthritis, which affects mobility and may have contributed to his knee problems.
He is facing non-bailable graft and plunder charges over allegations that he and several co-accused pocketed more than P573 million in kickbacks from anomalous flood control projects.
