Detained Sen. Jinggoy Estrada on Friday rejected claims that he could no longer serve as a senator-judge in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial, saying the issue remains unresolved.
He stressed that proceedings related to his Senate suspension are still pending and that he has yet to file his comment, opposition, and other legal remedies.
Estrada said any assertion that he has been stripped of his authority to perform his constitutional duties is premature, baseless, and could undermine the impeachment process.
He also criticized individuals he described as “self-proclaimed legal experts” for making sweeping pronouncements on the matter and urged respect for due process and proper institutions.
The detained senator said he would continue to defend his rights through legal means as the Senate prepares to begin Duterte’s impeachment trial on July 6.
