Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Adiong defended the House-approved anti-political dynasty bill, saying it is a genuine effort to address the concentration of political power among a few families.
He argued that criticism from civil society groups does not diminish the measure’s reform objectives.
The bill, approved on June 3, prohibits spouses and second-degree relatives from holding elected positions simultaneously.
Critics, including election watchdogs, have described the proposal as watered down and insufficient to curb political dynasties.
Adiong said the measure directly targets political monopolies and noted that separate legislation is being prepared to address dynasty issues in the party-list system.
