Acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian said his bloc is studying the possibility of electing another senator to preside over the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte amid circulating reports that Sen. Francis Escudero may take the post.
Gatchalian noted that the 12-member majority has yet to formally deliberate on the matter, stressing that no final decision has been made.
He said discussions will be held on the selection process, which comes after recent amendments to Senate impeachment rules allowing any senator elected by majority vote to preside over proceedings.
Traditionally, the Senate president serves as presiding officer in impeachment trials, except when the president of the Philippines is on trial, but the revised rules may soon take effect following publication requirements.
Escudero, who recently helped break a Senate deadlock, has been mentioned in speculation but has not been confirmed for the role.
