Overcrowded classrooms and bullying are contributing to student absenteeism and reduced engagement, according to findings from the Second Congressional Commission on Education (Edcom 2).
The commission held a focus group discussion on May 28 with junior high school students at President Corazon C. Aquino High School in Manila as part of an assessment of the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Summer Program.
Students reported that large class sizes of up to 60 learners often lead to disruptive environments, bullying, and feelings of insecurity, while smaller ARAL classes of about 10 students were described as safer and more supportive.
They also raised concerns about physical and cyberbullying, poor classroom conditions such as extreme heat and overcrowding, and early school schedules that add to student strain.
Edcom 2 officials said the findings highlight the need to address both academic challenges and student safety to improve learning outcomes in the country.
