Cavite 1st District Rep. Jolo Revilla, chairman of the House Committee on Labor and Employment, has expressed strong support for newly appointed Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Francis “Tol” Tolentino’s plan to increase the number of labor inspectors in the country.
Revilla also backed the proposed partnership between DOLE and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to train and develop additional inspectors to address the agency’s manpower shortage.
He cited data showing that while DOLE has 1,210 labor inspectors on paper, only 447 are actively conducting workplace inspections nationwide, a gap he said weakens enforcement of labor laws.
Revilla stressed the need for increased budget allocation for personnel services to allow the hiring of more inspectors, noting that training alone would not solve the shortage without funding for new positions.
He added that stronger labor inspection would improve worker protection, promote fair competition among employers, and support efforts to modernize labor governance in the country.
