Former president Rodrigo Duterte’s lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate killings under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration.
Kaufman cited data from the University of the Philippines’ Dahas Project, noting 342 killings in Marcos’ first year, 160 of which involved state agents.
He argued that the continued high rate of violence shows Duterte’s absence did not halt killings, challenging the prosecution’s claim that Duterte’s involvement was essential.
The defense also questioned whether the ICC had considered investigating the Marcos regime and holding officials accountable.
The ICC proceedings focus on three counts of crimes against humanity against Duterte, covering 78 alleged murders and attempted murders, with hearings ongoing to determine if the case proceeds to trial.
