The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued the rules that will govern the trial of former president Rodrigo Duterte over alleged crimes against humanity, with proceedings set to begin on November 30, 2026.
Under the court’s directives, the prosecution must submit its trial brief, witness list, and evidence by August 31, while Duterte’s defense has until October 30 to outline its key arguments and disputed issues.
The trial will proceed in stages covering the presentation of evidence by the prosecution, victims’ representatives, if permitted, and the defense, with detailed procedures for witness testimonies and evidence handling.
The ICC also outlined protective measures for witnesses and emphasized that victims’ representatives will focus on the interests of victims, including harm suffered and possible reparations.
Meanwhile, Duterte’s fitness to stand trial remains subject to a new medical assessment, with additional status conferences scheduled ahead of the trial.
