Philippine officials said China appears to be using a movable platform in Bajo de Masinloc to gather maritime data without Manila’s consent, calling it the first documented placement of such a structure in the disputed shoal.
The National Maritime Council said the platform, first monitored in late May, was likely being used for maritime research within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
The Philippine Coast Guard reported that the platform was possibly transported by two Chinese research vessels and was later observed with Chinese nationals on board.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has filed a diplomatic protest and demanded the platform’s removal, saying its presence violates Philippine sovereignty and international law.
Philippine authorities are continuing air and sea patrols in the area while assessing the platform’s purpose and any broader implications for maritime security.
