DND REJECTS CHINA’S CALL TO DROP PH CLAIM OVER BAJO DE MASINLOC

The Department of National Defense (DND) rejected China’s call for the Philippines to abandon its position on Bajo de Masinloc, saying Manila will continue to exercise its sovereignty over the disputed shoal.

DND spokesperson Asst. Sec. Arsenio Andolong said China made false claims about lawful Philippine actions in the country’s territory and maritime areas.

The DND said the Philippines’ position is based on international law, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

It also defended the submission of an updated nautical chart to the United Nations, saying it clarifies the limits of Philippine maritime zones around Bajo de Masinloc.

Andolong said the Philippines will not be deterred by China’s claims and will continue to uphold its lawful rights over the shoal.
