The city government of Cagayan de Oro has activated safety measures to lessen the impact of the El Niño phenomenon, particularly on farmers in upland barangays.
Local officials have formed Task Force El Niño to monitor the dry spell and coordinate response efforts among concerned agencies.
The city agriculture office said support programs are in place, including efforts to encourage farmers to shift to drought-resistant crops and adjust planting schedules to avoid losses.
Authorities are also working to stabilize the irrigation supply through measures such as deploying water pumps, while assisting over 11,000 affected beneficiaries.
Farmers have also been urged to insure their crops, as climate projections show a high probability of El Niño developing in the coming months.
