Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said the proposed Anti-Political Dynasty Act aims to prevent political families from simultaneously controlling local government units and their resources.
The bill would prohibit close relatives within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity from running for or holding office in the same locality at the same time.
Adiong said the measure seeks to stop possible manipulation of LGU resources while balancing the public’s right to vote and seek office.
The proposed law, currently pending second reading in the House of Representatives, is backed by House leaders and listed as a priority measure under the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council.
Lawmakers supporting the bill described it as a major step toward enforcing the anti-political dynasty provision of the 1987 Constitution.
