Erwin Tulfo renewed his push for the proposed Media Workers’ Magna Carta following the May 13 gunfire incident at the Senate that reportedly traumatized reporters covering the event.
Tulfo criticized authorities for allegedly restricting media access, saying press presence could have promoted accountability and discouraged violence.
He noted that Senate reporters are not trained for dangerous situations such as shootings, with some journalists reportedly breaking down during live coverage.
Senate Bill No. 249 seeks to provide media workers with minimum wages, hazard pay, insurance benefits, and security of tenure.
Tulfo said the measure aims to protect journalists’ rights and improve their welfare as they continue to uphold press freedom.
