Philippine food exporters are seeking to increase ube production as global demand for the purple yam continues to grow.
Industry group Philfoodex said low supply could drive up prices and allow regional competitors to overtake Philippine exporters.
The government is supporting production through improved planting materials, research and a proposed ube federation, while Rep. Richard Gomez has filed a bill declaring ube a national priority crop.
The proposed measure aims to boost farming, processing, branding and exports while protecting the authenticity of Philippine ube.
The Philippines produced 12,488 metric tons of ube in 2025 and exported $3.06 million worth of the crop.
