President Marcos has launched a 50-percent train fare discount for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) on Metro Manila’s LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 until 2028, expanding the previous 20-percent discount.
About 13 million seniors and 7 million PWDs stand to benefit from the increased subsidy, the President announced during an event at the Santolan-Annapolis MRT-3 station.
Marcos also highlighted the inaugural run of the long-idle China-made Dalian trains, which had been unused due to technical issues but are now being rehabilitated to increase train capacity.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) praised the fare discount increase and earlier free rides for PWDs during National Disability Rights Week.
Meanwhile, over four million indigent senior citizens continue to receive aid from the DSWD’s Social Pension program.
