More areas have been placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 as Tropical Depression Basyang moves west over the Philippine Sea, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gusts up to 70 kph, the weather bureau reported Wednesday.
The storm, located 655 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, is expected to bring strong winds to parts of the Visayas, Mindanao, and surrounding regions.
PAGASA also warned of gale-force gusts due to the northeast monsoon and heavy rainfall across Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao de Oro, and Davao Oriental.
Low-lying coastal communities in the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao face a minimal to moderate risk of storm surge up to two meters.
Basyang is forecast to make landfall over eastern Mindanao between Thursday night and Friday, prompting continued monitoring and warnings.
